SOOTHING YOUR SUMMER
Summer is a time when many of us begin the ritualistic return to local gyms, summer workout routines, jogging, cycling, walking, pilates, yoga and belly dancing! In this season of expansion activities, like these, invigorate the body and begin the process of stimulating our yang’s energy cycle.

In summer our energy can take a less constructive path.  We may overwork or indulge in pointless worry and obsessive thought patterns during this time. In our search to satisfy this Summer-time thirst for action and stimulation we often find ourselves attracted to strongly stimulating visual imagery, such as new release blockbuster movies. This and other types of over-stimulation and worry (have you thought about Christmas yet?) can often contribute to racing thoughts and restlessness.

Our philosophy of living in balance with the seasons sees the frenzy to activate and move as an important one, providing we don’t ignore our natural instincts to balance the body and engage the mind. So, whilst summer activities tend to favour the body we also need to consider their effect on stimulating our active minds.

Summer balance is simple to achieve by including the sense of touch with your Summer program. The skin and the nervous system have a profound and ancient relationship creating a powerful link between mind and body. Touch can be very effective in soothing and slowing the activity of a racing, excitable, Summer mind. When therapeutically applied, touch is able to create a healthy balance between the activities of our body and our mind. A sense of touch can ease an over-heated mind and refocus our energy down and out through the soles of our body – the feet.

Here are some fun ways to keep your body balanced this Summer:
Take a trip to the beach and walk barefoot on the sand.
The sensory stimulation of walking on the moist, gritty sand is particularly beneficial for fretfulness and racing thoughts. (Walking barefoot on grass has a similar effect.)

Engage the senses during a 15 minute anti-power walk.
Focus your awareness on the sensory experiences you encounter whilst strolling at a relaxed pace for 15 minutes.

Soothe the soles in a tepid footbath.
When you return from your walk complete the journey with a tepid (not cold) footbath. To release the active yang energy from the feet add to your bath, 3 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of tea tree oil. Soak the feet for about 10 minutes, then dry the feet by rubbing vigorously with a coarse towel.

Ayurvedic philosophy holds that simply gazing at something beautiful will calm Summer’s excessive Fire energy and assist in creating life balance.

I know I now take the risk of sounding like Martha Stewart, but I encourage you to read on..

Creating something beautiful to gaze at is as simple as transforming your dinner or lunch table into an altar that celebrates the delights of your imagination.

When creating your ‘something beautiful’ we suggest you begin with a simple dinner or lunch party for friends. Start your creation by allowing plenty of time to gather materials for your dinner party altar...the fun and discovery of creating a beautiful setting is just as important as the meal you enjoy there.

If you prefer, share the preparation with others as Summer is the ideal time for group activities. Enjoy the time and fun you have with others creating your ‘something beautiful’ together.

Remember “Beauty is always in the Eye of the Beholder.”

Some Beautiful tips:

-Create your altar in a garden, on a terrace, or on a lawn. By placing a table in an unexpected spot you refresh the eyes and rearrange expectations.

-Drape your table generously with a really interesting swath of fabric. If it’s hot and sultry, light pastel colours are most cooling to the eye. Vintage or sheer fabrics can also add another dimension of interest.

-Create an oversized, low flower arrangement for your table using a variety of red, pink and orange hued flowers.

-Place simple white bowls either side of the flower arrangement and fill with beautiful ripe summer fruits.

-Tie crisp, oversized, white linen napkins with long sprigs of creeping rosemary and tuck a flower into each.

-Use a cheerful jumble of glassware and colourful mismatched plates to encourage that relaxed summer-time feeling.

-When you sit down at your table to eat, take several deep breaths and allow yourself to absorb the visual beauty of your altar.

-Music is the language of Summer, so add a special audio element to your altar, by hiding a portable stereo somewhere in the foliage. Better yet, invite musically inclined friends to share your meals. A personal performance is the ultimate Summer-time experience!

BALANCING THE FIRE
“The Five Elemental Energies of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water encompass all the myriad phenomena of nature. It is a paradigm that applies equally to humans.”
The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine (2nd Century B.C.)

Fire is the predominant elemental energy of Summer . When in balance with the other elements in this season we feel a predominance of the emotion “joy". In this season the balance between work and play is important. Play releases and expands the physical and subtle body which encourages the flow of joy by balancing the powerful influence of Fire.

The fire element is all about having the experience, sensing, feeling and being in the moment. Fire is related to the heart, which is the seat of human emotions and the organ whose constant warmth and pulse keeps blood and energy moving.

Let’s take a closer look at this idea. The basic seasonal cycles of nature influence every living thing on earth. For now we will just focus on the impact of Summer. Summer is the most overtly energetic phase of the cycle, when the ‘heat’ of full yang energy is sustained. All life forms flourish in Summer thanks to the warm, stable glow of fire energy.

In balance we see our chi energy move outward and expand encouraging the flow of joy and love that should come naturally during this time of year. If out of balance with other elements in this season Fire exhausts the chi energy and overwhelms the body. An overwhelmed body with the element of fire is quick to anger, fatigues easily, is exhausted and looks red or rosy in the cheeks. These symptoms are signals to re-balance the body with the other elemental energies.

During Summer, cool foods, water and colour can help balance the body to reduce the effects of the predominant Fire element.

Enjoy cool foods like salads, lime juice dressings, and yoghurts. Combine cool foods with water focused therapies, such as water massages (try Aurora’s Vitality Massage or a Vichy/Rainshower Therapy).

The inclusion of water in Summer balances the fire energy and earths the body. Add the colour green to flower arrangements or a bowl of crystals (aventurine is a good one) at home.

Relax and cool the body in a regular tepid bath of herbal tea. A wonderful mix of calendula, lemon grass and lemon verbena (Aurora’s Vitality Tea) is placed in a cheesecloth covering and left in the bath to infuse. Tea baths will also assist in keeping the skin radiant and replenish drained energy.

Don’t be overwhelmed by Fire this Summer. Take these steps to ensure that you remain in balance throughout the season.

The Art of Salad Making
A light Summer salad can be a dinner or an accompaniment. When possible, choose greens that have been grown in your region; they are more seasonally attuning. The fresher the better and, naturally nothing beats lettuce picked straight from your garden.

Salads should be refreshing and colourful in appearance and taste. Dressings may be varied to complement the ingredients of the salad. If the salad is plain, a complex dressing may be used (and vice versa). When using cabbage, onion, beans or other sulphurous vegetables, you may like to include herbs that aid digestion of these. We recommend dill seed, aniseed, fennel, caraway, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, or mint. Cabbage leaves also like a heavier dressing.

Leaf and root vegetables should be of good colour and washed and scrubbed clean under running water then dried. It is best if they are not peeled, as a lot of the nutritional value lies just beneath the skin. The vegetables can then be dressed and refrigerated to keep them crisp.

Lettuce, spinach, dandelion leaves, and other tender leaves, keep their flavour and crispness better if they are torn rather than cut. Dress tender leaves lightly as too much oil will make them go limp.

When shredding or grating vegetables, try not to leave them out and exposed to the air for too long. Ideally, dress shredded vegetables fairly quickly to prevent oxidizing (loss of vitamins) and eat them.

Fresh green herbs in your salad enhance the flavour and improve the appearance. Fresh green herbs also aid digestion, cleanse the blood and provide valuable nutrition. (Dried herbs can be used, but try to use them sparingly as they tend to cause gas and digestive disturbances).

Carrot, Apple and Fig Salad

1 medium carrot, grated
1 medium apple, grated
3-4 fresh or dried figs, finely chopped
1 tbsp ground almonds
1 tsp honey
2 tsp lemon juice
2 tbsp olive oil OR biodynamic cream

Toss well, and enjoy!

SPA TREATMENT REVIEW
Aurora Crystal Balance Massage (NEW)
The Aurora Crystal Balance Massage (1 or 1.5 hours) is a firm rhythmically flowing massage that incorporates crystal therapy, acupressure, Thai and reflexology techniques.

Under the intuitive touch of an Aurora spa therapist the massage begins with a centering visualisation and placements of warm crystals on the major energy centres of the body (the hara and solar plexus). This balancing earthlike ritual begins all Aurora treatments and is designed to open the heart and soothe the mind.

Crystal Therapy wands are then used to stimulate acupressure points in a combination of strokes that work in tandem with traditional massage techniques and Australian aromatherapy oils. The flow of this massage is specific to the clients needs and includes a sequence of crystal placement throughout the massage to bring the body back into balance with the seasons.

This 1 or 1.5 hour balancing treatment works directly with light, colour and the perfect geometric shapes produced by Australia’s unique mineral kingdom.

The unique Zebra Stone used in this treatment has been placed 600 million years in the Upper Proterozonic era or Pre-Cambrian period and mimics the rhythmical flow of this unique spa therapy. The only known deposits in the world have been discovered in the East Kimberleys, Western Australia.

The Zebra Stone consists of a fine grained siliceous argillite with rhythmic patterns of red bands or spots contrasting sharply with a lighter background. The stone’s unsurpassed natural beauty typifies the colour and spirit of Australia.

The Red Jasper, Tiger’s Eye and Lapis Lazuli used in this treatment have been sourced from Western Australia, South Africa and Afghanistan. These universal healing stones receive, activate and restore energy.

SPA TRAVEL
Willow Stream – The Spa at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, Arizona

Here the elements surge, where the rugged Sonoran Desert floor rises to meet the imposing ridge of the McDowell Mountains.

It is a place born of air, fire and water. The innovative spa design was inspired by a place called Havasupai (pronounced Hah-vah-su-pie), a hidden oasis in the Grand Canyon where energy unites and restores. The spa’s mesa rooftop pool combines the healing elements of water and air under the cobalt canopy of the Arizona sky. Enjoy views of the McDowell Mountains from private sun baking cabanas.

From the Mesa the rhythmic flow of our Havasupai Waterfall cascades over the red Sedona-hued stones to complement your journey through the spa. You can relax in the Desert Oasis, or the open-air reflection atrium, or experience the 3 levels of massage in the waterfall massage pool.

The hot stone massage is the Spa’s signature treatment and many of the treatment rooms have private outdoor patios. The surroundings of the spa are stunning from the architecture to the raw natural beauty of the Arizona desert and canyons.

In total they have 25 treatment rooms (as compared with 22 at Aurora). You could easily spend a whole day at this spa enjoying the communal facilities. I would suggest booking in for their signature stone massage.

Improvements and drawbacks
The busiest time for this spa is from January to May. Though it was a massive spa complex I would try to avoid those times. There are not many improvements you could make to the layout, design and interiors of this spa – given they spent US $16 million building the spa, I was hoping it would be pretty special. My treatment on the day was average as my therapist wanted to chat throughout my treatment. My advice is, at the start of the treatment let the therapist know that you want to have quiet time to relax, it’s much easier if you say this at the beginning – that’s really at any spa. When you are booking your treatment be aware that 16% gratuity is automatically added to your bill, which was a bit foreign for me, given the treatment was already US$159 for a 1 hour massage.

Score out of 10: 7
(10 being exceptional)
